23 Flamerule – 1490 – Year of the Star Walker’s Return

As morning dawned the group met in the common room of the Stonehill Inn to make their plan for returning to the Phandelver mine. Jortran was still unconscious in his room. As they mulled over their options, Maltan-Ragnar informed the group that he’d received a vision while praying that he believed was a message from his god, leading them to some special weapon that might help them on their quest. He asked that the party return to the cellars under Tresendar Manor to look down in a crevasse for a sword. The other party members agreed. Gundren and Nundro, meanwhile, would start making preparations for reopening the mine.

D&D Sessions – Lost Mine of Phandelver Episode 14 Around Town

These are the journal entries for our D&D 5th Edition campaign being played on Roll20. There are 6 PCs: Ragnar (Paladin), Eamon (Cleric), Jortran (Druid), Tec (Rogue), Malfred (Warlock), and Tristan (Barbarian).

21-22 Flamerule – 1490 – Year of the Star Walker’s Return

Nundro RockseekerThe party, tired from their battles in the mines, returned to Phandalin at dusk with Nundro safely in tow. They went quickly to the Town Master’s Hall to check on the Redbrand prisoners, and discovered that the bumbling townsfolk that had been guarding the building had been replaced by more “professional” looking guards who were respectful but all business. The prisoners were also being guarded by more professional guards, and the heroes noticed that the hall had been tidied up and organized. Harbin was working in his office, and seemed very irritable.

D&D Sessions – Lost Mine of Phandelver Episode 13 Oh, No, Nundro!

These are the journal entries for our D&D 5th Edition campaign being played on Roll20. There are 6 PCs: Ragnar (Paladin), Eamon (Cleric), Jortran (Druid), Tec (Rogue), Malfred (Warlock), and Tristan (Barbarian).

21 Flamerule – 1490 – Year of the Star Walker’s Return

After defeating the drow-turned-doppelganger, the party elected to search about the caverns. Jortran cast Detect Magic, and learned that the staff carried by the doppelganger was not magic, though Ragnar was convinced otherwise. Jortran also detected magic coming from the crevasse, and climbed down to search. Tristan meanwhile looted the bodies of the fallen bugbears.

Malfred, impatient to move on, ventured up a hallway he found at the north end of the cavern, from which he assumed the doppelganger had come. He crept along in the dark, with his special vision only to aid him, and found that the hall zig-zagged. As cautiously as he could, he poked his head around the corner to see what lay beyond. It was just as Jortran uncovered a long-buried skeleton of a dwarf with shining gauntlets, that the group heard a strangled cry from the north. Malfred stumbled back into the cavern clutching at a javelin that had entered his cheek and was poking out the back of his neck. Continue reading

D&D Sessions – Lost Mine of Phandelver Episode 12 Bugbears, and Spiders, and Drow… oh my!

These are the journal entries for our D&D 5th Edition campaign being played on Roll20. There are 6 PCs: Ragnar (Paladin), Eamon (Cleric), Jortran (Druid), Tec (Rogue), Malfred (Warlock), and Tristan (Barbarian).

20-21 Flamerule – 1490 – Year of the Star Walker’s Return

After defeating the ochre jelly, the party was joined by Tecton, who ran after them from town. They ventured off down the mine tunnels, stumbling upon a large naturally formed room occupied mostly by a wide and deep pool of water. The room was dark, save for their own lights, and still they were haunted by the rhythmic booming noise that echoed from far away in the tunnels like clockwork.

Spying something at the bottom of the pool of water, Jortran bravely dove in and swam down to investigate. There, under a water-logged cloak, lay the mouldering bones of some long-dead humanoid. On its left hand gleamed two platinum rings, and clutched in its right was some sort of wand. Jortran retrieved both and returned to the surface. Continue reading

D&D Monster: The Caller From The Deeps

This is a 5e conversion of a monster originally published by WotC for Dungeons & Dragons 3.5 edition.

Back in 2005 Wizards of the Coast published another great book in their series of “Environment” hard cover supplements for D&D 3.5 called Stormwrack. As you might be able to guess from the title and cover, it’s all about aquatic adventuring. Recently I needed an aquatic monster to pit my PCs against in Curse of Strahd, and wanted something that would seem otherworldly and horrific, without being overpowering (thus, no Aboleth!). I didn’t find what I wanted in the 5th edition Monster Manual, but while flipping through Stormwrack I came across the perfect creature, The Caller From The Deeps

The morning after their assault on the Redbrands’ hideout, and having saved the remaining members of the Dendrar family, the PCs took care of some business around the town while waiting for Thel Dendrar’s funeral to begin. Malfred questioned the Redbrand prisoners to learn what he could about the Black Spider and Iarno “Glasstaff” Albrek. Ragnar bought a nice suit for the funeral, and also possibly to impress Sister Garaele, while Jortran went hunting mushrooms, Tristan purchased a horse and cart, and Eamon did Eamon things. Tec, meanwhile, continued to guard the Town Master’s hall.
